All Right . . . You Didn't Believe Me

In response to the comments in the last post . . . here it is. EXACTLY as my desk looks today. You didn't believe me when I said it was messy. Well, I am not one to go "There . . . I showed you." But there . . . I showed you.
Note the overflowing trash can. The galleys. The overflowing basket of receipts. The roll of wrapping paper to the right that has been there six months. You get the idea.
Unedited. Unvarnished. The real deal.
My desk.

Wow, you are a brave woman Erica! Though truth be told, I don't really think it's all that bad, it's really quite charming!
Erica, that looks astonishingly like my desk. I tend to be a very organized person. If things get out of whack int he pantry or linen closet, I straighten it up. I like being able to find what I need when I want it. But my desk continues to be a cluttered mess of stuff.
I can't even blame it on my writing style because I LOVE the outline. I always have one (except for this one book that just won't cooperate). I clean the desk off and make the promise that it'll stay that way. But in a few days, it's messy again. Right now my desk holds hand cream, eyeglasses cleaner, TV remote, calculator, water, diet coke, bills to be paid, a fan (that isn't even working), stapler, tape dispenser, phone book, a notebook, nail clippers, pencil cup, assorted pens, telephone, junk mail, a backscratcher, and a bra. Oh and two decks of playing cards that I never use.
At least your desk still has a computer... mine has no more room for even that.
Instead of fighting the clutter, embrace it. Allow yourself the space to be ok with how it is.
Then cleaning and organizing won't feel like work, because you won't be fixing the clutter.
Much more zen than the binge and purge you are going through.
Alyson:
I don't know that it's all that charming when I can't find things. LOL!

Glad to know I am not the only one.
And you know, you made me realize something. Perhaps it's because it's MORE than a desk. I kind of live here.

Ahh . . . my new mantra:
EMBRACE THE CLUTTER. EMBRACE THE CLUTTER.
Om mani padme hum . . . .

I have a separate desk for bills and letters and stuff, so my writing area usually doesn't get very cluttered. You might try that. Or you might try one of those vacuum cleaners like the cartoon Pink Panther uses. :)
You're definitely not alone with the Messy Brain Syndrome thing though. I'm usually good about checking pockets, but last night I was so absorbed with my writing I put my cell phone in the washing machine. Normal cycle. Hot water. I didn't realize it until I heard it thumping around in the dryer.
The SIM card survived, so now I'm carrying around an old Nokia the size of a brick. :(
I dig your chaos. It's cool.
Heather:
Welcome to my chaos.
I embrace it now, thanks to Ewoh. Actually, I'm not "there" yet, but I did look at my notebook for my new top-secret project--and it's all doodles and mess . . . and obviously, there's some kind of method to my madness.
E
Jude:
Enjoy the brick. :-)

Miraculously, the one I put in the washing machine is working again now. And, it's nice and clean!
I think I'll approach Samsung with an ad proposal. Does Jay handle things like that? ;)
I do the same thing when I'm writing. I just started a new book last week, so I have a few clear spots. By next week those spots will be gone, covered in notes that I write to myself.
I like the idea that a messy desk means I'm working. I embrace the mess too.
But see, that's not so bad. And I see that there's just enough room for a small plate of cookies, or crackers, or some such snack next to your drink. What more do you need?
:-)
Erica,
You are not alone!
I thought getting a writing table would assist in the organizing. Now, I have two surfaces filled.
There are two desk organizing trays among the clutter, awaiting my deorganizing attempts.
My writing files are organized and coordinated, but alas, the DESK is not.
Though I don't wish disorganized tendencies on anyone, it's great to know that I'm not on my own among the clutter.

It's the so-called "slippery slope" of deskdom.
E
spy:
You're right. What more do I need? :-) Just a little spot for sustenance. LOL!
E
kathy:
I tried that route once before too. I had an architect-style desk for writing . . . and then a functional desk for bills and so on. TWICE the mess.
:-)
