Misbehaving

I got a great Christmas present from my best friend. A bracelet engraved with the following statement:

WELL-BEHAVED WOMEN RARELY MAKE HISTORY

So true.

So I have decided that's my motto for the New Year. I am not going to behave. I am not EVER going to care what people think about what I wear, what I do, or what I say. Not that I do now (which is why she thought of me when she bought the bracelet).

But most especially, it's a reminder to writers. To anyone thinking about daring to write a novel, quitting the day job, doing something kind of crazy like embarking on a publishing journey.

Don't behave. It's completely nuts to quit a stable day job to write the Great American Novel, but you know what? Life's not a dress rehearsal. Don't behave. To search for an agent, to put yourself out there, you have to misbehave. You have to throw caution to the wind.

I've never behaved and I rather like how things have turned out. I still have seven books under contract. I have a chaotic life I have kind of hated lately . . . but one viewing of "It's a Wonderful Life" cured me of it.

If you don't like your life, only you can fix it.

So I am not going to behave.

I like my new motto for the New Year.

Anyone else have one?

I finished the first draft of my screenplay yesterday. Everything was in place for a nice neat HEA Hollywood ending, and then...

Well, let's just say something unexpected happened. Let's just say I was a very naughty boy.

I misbehaved.

It's the right ending, I think, one that feels inevitable now that it's done.

But will it sell? And, if it does, will some script doctor or director opt for an alternate ending?

Time will tell, I suppose, but for now it's my story and I'm sticking to it.

It feels good to be bad. :)

Love to misbehave.:) I've been bitching a lot about the government lately. I don't like being a person who bitches. So this morning I got the idea of finding ways to work for change instead.

I don't know what my motto would be, but I'm going to give it a shot.

How wonderful! I like being a person of change myself. I've taken my kids to march on Washington in protest . . . I've worked in a number of mentoring situations with at-risk kids. BE the change you want to see.

I saw that quote in the past few days! I can't think of where. I loved it, too.

Last year, my motto was "Be real." I think I was too real a few times, LOL, but I don't regret it. I've only come up with two New Year's Resolutions so far.

Except right now, I never want to eat again, ever. But there's pumpkin pie ...

January 1, I get back to total macrobiotic/vegan . . . Looking forward to it. Yesterday I ate turkey bacon! Need to get back to my feeling-good diet. :-) No pumpkin pie! LOL!

I have a rare talent for getting in as much or more trouble when I 'think' I'm behaving as I do when I just say 'F*** it!' and do what I want.

So I'm going to steal from Mae West and aim to live up to this: "I'm no angel, but I've spread my wings a bit."

Hi Lainey:
I LOVE that quote. I may have to tape it up on my desk.
