In the Company of Greatness

Well, I always knew you guys were a great bunch. But last week I heard from a dedicated lurker, who has left a few comments here and there. We know her as "MicheleL." And that Michele L. turned out to be . . . Michele Lang. And she sent me a wonderful email that arrived in my in-box on one of "those days." And for not the first time, I was reminded that the universe sends you angels on days you need them.

Then I KNEW Michele was really a dedicated lurker, because she wrote me, "I know you don't read fiction, but would you like a copy of my first release, Netherwood?" (If you're a regular reader, you know I mostly read physics texts, though last night at 11:30 p.m., I was trying to wrap my mind around quasar splitting and got a headache.) Anyway, I accepted--mostly because, I told her, it sounded like the kind of book Oldest Son would read, and for this once I wanted him to think I was a "cool" mom for knowing a sci fi writer. THEN she sent me the ARC.

Can I tell you this book totally and completely ROCKS? I mean, from page one, rocks. It's for the new Shomi line. And this isn't what I usually read (even if I was going to read fiction), but ladies and gentlemen . . . it's got this WHOLE other level going on, discussions of the soul, of what makes us human, a love story, all wrapped up in a sci fi book with avatars and "Netherwood."

So I asked Michele to visit us today, THE DAY OF ITS RELEASE!!!!!!!!! And she agreed to share her call story. Here it is.

All in Good Time

Yesterday at dinner, my sons were in an inexplicably angelic mood. As I rushed around, spilling soup on my shoes, burning my thumb on the toaster oven, my oldest one, like a Zen master, murmured, “Take your time, Mom. Take all the time you need.”

My oldest kid is intense, off in his own world most of the time, but he often channels wisdom far beyond his seven years. I took a deep breath, served up his fish sticks with a flourish, and my personal Yoda rewarded me with a smile. “That’s better. Slow down, and you’ll get done in good time.”

The little guy is right. I am not exactly known for my patience and stoicism. Though I console myself with the personal belief that I have the temperament of a racehorse – nervy and full of heart – I have to admit my son knows my weaknesses. Despite my belief in a higher purpose, I usually try too hard to make things happen that were going to happen anyway, sooner or later.

I got the call for NETHERWOOD on June 7th, 2007 – it was a Thursday morning. Despite the fact that I’ve gotten e-books published before, even despite the fact that I had polished the partial to a high gleam before sending it in, I was completely caught off guard by Chris Keeslar’s voice on the phone. I sat on the saggy green sofa in my writing room, held my head in my hands as we spoke, and I tried to sound like a rational human being instead of somebody knocked off her feet by the vision of a dream coming true.

I love the motto of Shomi: Where anything is possible. I love that celebration of exploring new worlds, re-envisioning new ways of looking at this one. And l love the idea of change exploding your old world apart, bringing something new to life.

You might know that Aerosmith song: “It’s amazing…in the blink of an eye, you finally see the light…” It’s good to take your time, take a deep breath – because you never know when you will actually break through. And you want to be ready. Despite all my fussing and scheming and furious scribbling, when the moment of change came, I was caught unprotected, supremely vulnerable. Vulnerable is good. But knowing you’re ready is also good. Because, honestly, anything is possible.

Thank you Erica for celebrating with me!
So, gang, ask her anything you want about the book, Shomi, or the wild ride of selling your first book. And . . . is that not the most Zen, cool "call" story?

AND . . . I have to say, Michele wrote me on a day I felt so low. And here she has shared about those moments of "breakthrough." Being a writer is really a tough gig. I don't have to tell you that. Published authors have their share of "those days." (Add a Demon Baby and . . . well, I don't have to describe what bird seed dumped into a keyboard results in.) And unpubbed authors are often bravest of all. You're waiting, often for events you can't control. And so we each take those bits of encouragement where we find it. So what encourages you on your journey?
Finally, visit www.michelelang.com. And please, talk to her here today. Everybody only has one "first book," one "first call." I'm so honored she's sharing her release day with us. And the book is AWESOME! I can't wait for my son to read it.

Congrats, Michelle!

Last time I checked, Dorchester still accepted unagented submissions. Did you submit through an agent, or directly to an editor at Shomi? If directly to an editor, are you working with an agent now that you have a contract?

Thanks!

I LOVE first call stories. I especially love yours, Michelle. After seeing that your other books were with Trisk, that makes this all the more sweeter. You're like a Phoenix reborn from the ashes, girlfriend. May you have many sales and more contracts to come.

Hi Michele:
You know, I didn't realize you were a Trisk orhpan. Marcia is right--it makes it DOUBLY wonderful.

And I think there's also a lesson in there . . . write a good book, write what's near and dear to your heart, with passion . . . and you can overcome a lot.

Whoa...

I go off on my kid taxi run, deliver personal Yoda and his brother to their destinations, and come home to this welcoming place!!!

Thank you so much, Erica, for hosting me here...what a fantastic way to celebrate :)

Jude: Thank you so much! And great question, btw. Dorchester indeed takes proposals unagented, though I have heard the wait time can be pretty long. I had the good fortune of meeting Chris Keeslar on the way home from the Romantic Times convention at Daytona Beach...Karmela Johnson, Chris and I were all on the same plane.

We talked for awhile on the trip home. I knew Chris was working on developing the Shomi line, and I pitched the idea as a futuristic, offworld Robin Hood story for Shomi. Chris liked the idea, and asked me to send him a proposal.

As a result of Chris's call, I now have an agent -- the fantastic Lucienne Diver. She is terrific in every way, and selling NETHERWOOD made it possible for us to connect.

I'll keep answering any and all questions!

Thanks so much Marcia. Yes, it's true...I am one of the Triskelion survivors. About a month before Chris called me about NETHERWOOD, I pulled my books, right before the company declared bankruptcy. I had four books with them, and it was hard to go into limbo.

But, now...it is so, so sweet. I keep in touch with other former Triskelion authors, brilliant and talented every single one of them. We're all moving on!

It is so important to keep going in this business...lots of thrills and spills.

Thanks again, Marcia

Hi Erica --

It's so true. My heart was broken in May 2007 when Triskelion folded. A lot of good people were caught in that landslide. But writing itself saved me...I kept at it, bit by bit. I used all my grief, my anxiety, all of it, in my writing.

Sublimation, it's my friend :)

And thanks for wandering over to our part of the playground. Or coffee shop, as Erica would have it.

Here's a chippendale for your viewing pleasure.

Hey Erica:

What's so sad is that the company had been going gangbusters at one point, and attracted some superbly talented writers. What's more, the contracts were not that bad, at least not the earlier version I had signed. What tied everything up in litigation in the end was the bankruptcy, not the book contracts themselves.

What is wonderful is that time really did heal these wounds. As I mentioned, I am in touch with a number of former Trisk authors, who have taken quantum leaps in their own careers. We've moved onward and upward :)

Michele

Really,

Hi Michele:
I should have clarified. Yeah . . . bankruptcy law is pretty nuts. But it is really wonderful to see you--and others--rise above it all.

What had to have been hard was to be "so close"--to have a book contract and then watch it blow up. I know when the Bombshell line closed, I landed on my feet, but not everyone was so lucky, and it was heartbreaking because some of the writers had become true friends.

Hey Erica:

I am still mourning the demise of Bombshell...some of those books were fantastic. And you are SO right...the sensation of going backward was pretty strong last May.

But it was liberating too (warning: Zen alert LOL). It's easy to be philosophical when life is on the upswing, but I think a writer's career often grows in the aftermath of disaster, either personal or professional. Like our characters, we grow in soul, ultimately stronger than our adversities.

In this case, it was tough love from the biz -- I had to dig deeper, reach higher. I was lucky to land on my feet too. :)

As always, you inspire me and get me thinking!

Congratulations, Michelle! That is such a cool call story. I'm writing this down now. I used to read a ton of SF, but wandered away. I've been coming back to it. I just love the world-building.

Erica, you don't read fiction at all? You sound like me and music. I rarely listen to music, and only if it's world music and not western harmonies. I hope writing doesn't spoil my enjoyment of reading.

I agree that unpubbed authors are the bravest of all. And I really hope you have very few tough days, Erica! You deserve many, many good ones.

Hi Spy:
I am in a women's book group, so I will read whatever is picked for that month. Other than that . . . nada.

Mostly, I don't want someone else's style to distract me. Some of it is being an editor by trade and sort of editing as I read, which isn't enjoyable. Some of it is TIME. I have precious little time to read, so I pick something horizon-stretching that I truly love.

Hi Amie --

Happy to oblige with a blurb! :)

NETHERWOOD tells the story of Talia Fortune, an intergalactic sheriff on the offworld colony Fresh Havens, rife with danger, sabotage, deception, and destruction.

As I mentioned to Jude, NETHERWOOD is a futuristic retelling of the Robin Hood story in the time of the Singularity -- that is, when computers become sentient and decide that human beings are the bugs in the system.

Talia hunts her cyber outlaw into the depths of a sentient Sherwood. And what she discovers when she finds him destroys her
world and everything she thought she knew about herself.

I've posted reviews, interviews, and a book trailer at my website, and I consider the metaphysical challenges of technology at my blog. Please come visit! :)

As far as what's next, I'm working on a book set in the same universe now, and also have a fantasy story in the works.

Thanks for that most excellent question! ;)

Thanks so much for your kind words. Please drop me a line and let me know what you think of NETHERWOOD...I am fortunate in that a new generation of wonderful SF romance writers are pushing the envelope, both at Shomi and throughout the genre. It's a great time to be writing speculative/SF romance!

And amen about rough days...it's the isolation, it kills. And I think it's easier to be isolated when you are starting out, unpubbed. I'm a little shy, but I'm learning how important it is to find my strength with other people, whether they are unpubbed, pubbed, readers, or people who never read anything LOL
