Superstition

I have more deal "news" soon. Big news. Ecstatic news. But . . . no further hints. Why?

I am superstitious.

I never "announce" until not only have I agreed to a deal, gotten my manuscript due date from the editor, and am working furiously . . . but also that the ink is dry on contracts. Nothing "bad" has ever happened to me wherein I got and agreed to a deal and then it fell through. But you never know. I am convinced writers are a superstitious lot.

To that end, my writing pal JVZ sent me this post over at Nathan Bransford's blog. I think it should be required reading for EVERY aspiring author. Every one. And even established authors.

This deal I don't want to jinx has been . . . 13 or 14 months in the making. It has included one face-to-face meeting in NYC over a year ago (starting this timeline), 1 rejected proposal, a second proposal, requests for absolutely brilliant changes in said proposal (the editor has great instincts), my NOT DOING the revisions as my dad went blind, my Baby Girl got rheumatic fever, and I got strep throat, and six of us got the stomach flu. I don't EVEN need to bring in Demon Baby's Nefarious Syrupy Plot to Take Over the World. Suffice it to say, I was not inspired. Then I was. A new first line came to me, the pieces fell into place. I sent off the new proposal. Then I waited. Not long, actually. Maybe . . . 6 weeks, maybe 8. I don't know. Long enough that I forgot about it. Long enough that I didn't expect a deal.

And in this entire time, I have mentioned this book on this blog ONE TIME. One. Because I am superstitious. Because deals sometimes take that long and I don't want to friggin' jinx it. Because I STILL won't reveal what it's about. Not yet. Not until Publisher's Marketplace--where it won't be listed until the ink is dry. Superstition.

A dear friend, who I won't "out" here unless he wants to say so himself, is "thisclose" to a deal. I won't even say where, but it's HUGE!!!!!! "Thisclose." I think it's safe to say that the thought of discussing it openly would make him vomit. Or maybe that's ME . . . I am THAT superstitious.

I thought about it today. Why? Why so superstitious? And then it dawned on me. There's talent. All right, maybe I have some. There tenacity. I know I have that when I am not completely stressed out--and even then I always bounce back. There's timing. Man, do I know about that. I rode Spanish Disco in at the VERY beginning of the Chick Lit craze. And then . . . there's luck. And anyone who tells you differently is lying. It's the luck that had (true story), Spanish Disco going to Editor #1,who adored it--but knew she could never get the book signed at her publishing house because it was too edgy, but she just so happened to know Editor #2 at a different house was looking for edgy, so Editor #1 called my agent and said, "Love it, can't sign it, send it to Editor #2." How often does that happen? It arrived to Editor #2 on a Friday, when she so happened to not have something to read on the train, and so she grabbed it and brought it with her for the train ride, and finished it that weekend . . . and by Monday, she said she was looking to make an offer. Then my agent waited for four weeks for it to really come through, during which time I breathed not ONE word to ANYONE . . . because I didn't want to jinx it. Because there are black cats and four-leaf clovers and deals that take a long time because everything has to fall into place just so.

So tell me . . . are you superstitious? In what way?

No, not superstitious in writing, but I still follow the old cavalry superstition of putting my left boot on first…left sock, left slipper…whatever. Cavalrymen, going back to knights and mounted men-at-arms, had to mount a horse from the left due to their swords. Well, cavalrymen carried that all the way to getting dressed to start a day. Anything less is asking for bad luck. That is why, in Western societies even today people are taught to mount from the left. Of course infantry men start marching left foot first too…but then, it was a cavalryman who wrote the first infantry drill manual.

Thanks for that little bit of history. I love to ride horses . . . and can still recall my buddy teaching me how to put my foot up in the stirrup . . . and mount from the left.

Awww, I would be, too! Actually, LOL, even for the essay thing, I didn't tell anyone until I got the first check.

I'm crossing my fingers for both you and your unnamed friend!

Hi Spy:
My offer is firm. But I still won't spill.

My friend is "thisclose" and man, when he gets it, you will hear me screaming all the way where you live. I rejoice in my friends' successes!!!!

Not superstitious at all.
When I paint-no one can look until its done. Or it gets tarnished and I lose the soul of the painting. So paintings hide until they are done.
Only a select few can read a story before its finished. Like the paintings, I have to protect its soul.
I never tell anyone when I hear from an agent. Cause of the jinx effect.
I talk to the universe (God, higherpower, however you name it)everyday because I believe it's important to keep that connection.
I believe the karma you send out is what comes back. Harm none or Karma will come and bite you in the ass.
Never say something could never happen. Cause thats when it does.
Superstitious? Okay, maybe a little.
Sending positive vibes your way! Go Erica, Go!

ooh, you tease us with your forthcoming news! But okay, tease a bit. I'm excited for you already and I don't even know what it is!
I don't know if I am superstitious. Well beyond the whole 'protect the magic' thing, when you're starting a new story you just don't talk about is 'cause you'll lose the love for it if you do and it won't be as good as it coulda been.

Congrats on your big news! Can't wait to hear more details. I totally understand your superstitiousness, by the way, because I get that way, too. And whenever I try to stop myself from heading in that direction I think, well, does it really hurt to be a little careful? Usually not.

I'm eager to hear your news! I wouldn't announce it until everything's been signed, either.

I'm superstitious, but not in a big way. I read T.J. MacGregor's horoscope for writers and believe in it. I stop writing and pet my cat (when she gets the urge to be friendly) because it's good karma.

That's pretty supersitious. And you know? I also find if I talk to early, I lose the energy . . . .

Well, then, I'll cross my fingers for your friend and congratulate you! :-) I'm thrilled for you, especially knowing how hard you're working for your kids and your daughter.

Btw, I have a note in my palm pilot that you have a book coming out in May, and one in November. Is this true?

(I'm not psycho fan, I swear, I just plan my book purchases, so I buy the ones most important to me before I accidentally buy the whole store!)

I have one in November, which will now be either a MIRA or HQN (called Freudian Slip), and I have one spring 2009 (Magickeppers), plus a Nocturne triology in 2009, but I don't have the dates yet. Plus I think this new one will be 2009.

Drat! I'm almost as nosy as I am superstitious. Hate it when you tease us this way. LOL Gimme somethin' to celebrate...*sigh* okay, I'll settle for celebrating the news to come! =)

I try very hard not to be superstitious, mainly because my mother has enough weird superstitions to fill a medical journal, but alas, the further I swim out in this writing ocean, the weirder I get.

Erica, congratulations on the good news! And I don't blame you a bit for not spilling until you're ready. I hope your friend gets the good news soon, too. I get vicarious thrills from other writers' successes.
As for superstition -- When I visit my mom, we play bingo at the casino and the entire process is one superstition after another.

You should never establish a pattern, such as putting your left sock on first or whatever. It makes it easier for "them" to get you.

I heard about your friend's potential deal through JP, and it sounds terrific. Fingers crossed for both of you!

LOL! Yes, that's true, but some things in real life, no matter how busy I am I still have to do. Like if I pass litter that someone has left, I HAVE to pick it up. It's karma thing. Maybe I think I was litter in a last life.

Commenting late, you are such a prolific blogger, gal! The only thing I can think of is the talking about a book before it's written. I can say it's going well, or having fun, but I can't discuss it in depth because of the energy thing others have mentioned. It's so true, nothing can sink a project quicker for me than chatting story...so I don't.

And I so can't wait to hear the book news! You inspire me.

Hi Ladonna:
I find I can "blurb" a book and match my excitement when I WRITE a blurb to a friend than when I talk about it . . . at least until I'm halfway done and "feeling" the book itself.
