Authentic Schmootz

As a New Yorker, I have my Yiddish expressions. I'm not Jewish, but the fact is you can't grow up near Manhattan without picking up some Yiddish, some Spanglish. And my favorite word is schmootz. As in (as a mother), "Come here, Demon Baby, let me get that little bit of schmootz off your face." Then, like a true mom, I use a little spit to wipe away the chocolate or whatever it is that is on his cheek or chin. Come on, all moms do this (maybe without the Yiddish). Now they even have THIS. (You MUST check this link out.) What an inspired bit of genius for THAT product.

Now here's the thing, there are some details so spot-on that without them, frankly, I don't buy a character. Maybe the mom in your work in progress doesn't wipe away schmootz, but there are some things about moms that are universal. And I don't mean mothers. See . . . anyone can be a mother. It takes a special kind of woman to be a mom.

As a student of life, I look for the authentic details to get "just right" about my characters. Until wine became trendy in the last 10-15 years, with people actually--besides the very upper class--becoming interested in tastings and so on, no self-respecting man ordered wine in a bar. As a former bartender, I know. They ordered beer. NOT that some didn't, but if you wanted, in a character, say a cop, to have made him a bit different--give him a nice pinot. Because that was uncommon. And white wine was a chick drink. And I can tell you, still, only a woman will order the abomination that is a white zinfandel (sorry to anyone who likes the stuff, but it's not real wine).

As writers, we notice the details without even noticing that we're noticing (at least that's what I think . . . I don't even realize how much I notice about scenes and people until I go to write later, and I don't take notes). In THE ROOFER, when Ava sticks her finger into the nicotine glaze on the walls of the bar, that was real. I know. I did the same thing.

Only a mom will use her sleeve in a pinch to wipe a runny nose and not think about it. Only someone who hates to lie will come up with something complicated when telling a lie. Lying makes them nervous. They embellish so it sounds better. Liars--habitual liars--know the simplest lie is best.

Anyway, you get the idea. So what's one authentic bit of schmootz or detail from your work in progress? And how many of you are rushing to buy that product I linked to? Come on. You know you want to.

Nowadays a man can (as you point out) order a red wine in a bar. I do it all the time, and no one has yet beaten me up. But a white wine? Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Liars--habitual liars--know the simplest lie is best.

I want to hear more about that; maybe in a future post. Because fiction writing is an elegant form of lying.

Hi Stephen:
Yes . . . red is acceptable. White? You know, you have to be able to pull it off.

As for lying . . . out it this way . . . I know some masters of the art. Can lie without batting an eye. Even about big stuff. Like crimes.

My bit of schmootz in my book would be publicly inappropriate sarcasm and humor. Sometimes we all do what we shouldn't - or we have. My main character does it "out loud" for my readers and I hope that realism hits home.

Like wiping a snotty nose with my sleeve (what mom hasn't) it's not something we admit, but something we love to know that other people do!

For example: my main character loves her kids, but she also loves when they leave for the weekend with her ex! She wants them to have fun - but not too much - and be comfortable and safe - but miss her.

My last book starts off with a protagonist hearing her chocolate stash calling her.

I can think of a commercial that always made me laugh. A woman is standing, talking on a phone. She looks down, sees a crumb caught on her top by her bustline. She picks it off her top and pops it in her mouth. That's schmootz. (And why is it both my examples have to do with food? I must be hungry.)

How inventive! I wish I'd thought of Momspit.

My schmootz is emotions triggered by scent. I can remember smelling X brand of hairspray in school and getting sad because it made me think of a boyfriend who had dumped me.

Those moments we don't admit provide such honesty in writing.

Erica, the Mom-spit is brilliant! The sheets and sunshine fragrances sound great. I'll probably be getting them. :)

And authentic schmootz is a right-on phrase. My consistent authentic schmootz would be the power my elderly characters bring to the table. No subtle elderly in my basket. They're loud and proud, and it's real.

I loved the comment about emotions triggered by scent. I'm always on that trail too.

That Momspit stuff is hilarious! But all the men in my stepfamily drink wine, and have forever. Red wine, though, homemade red wine. They're Italian. They make a Zinfandel, but it's not white. The Pinot Noir is the best.

Lots of people's voices change just the teensiest-tiniest bit when they lie. I've even been able to tell the difference with compulsive liars, even, but I have to know the voice for a little bit first. Actors can generally fool me, LOL, and people who incessantly BS, LOL, because their voice just stays in that BS sound. :-)

As for WIP, I'm not sure. I'm thinking she's sleeps under four or five thick covers, even in summer with no air conditioning. I haven't decided whether to keep it or not.

Speaking of details ... a clock?

MOM SPIT!!!!!!! That is too funny!!!!

I have nothing else to say because Mom spit is just killing me! I used to hate when my Mom did it to me and I don't tend to do Mom spit cause I think it is gross, but I have done the wipe boogers on my sleeves, popped something that the kids have spit out into my own mouth, etc.

My favorite yiddish is shmuck

As an ESL teacher (volunteer), I have learned that certain cultures/languages find certain sounds extraordinarily difficult. Vietnamese find "th" very difficult because there is no corresponding sound in their language to the exact way we pronounce it. So it was that I was trying to teach Yiddish to a French Canadian and no matter how hard I tried, he pronounced SCHMUCK and SMOCK. LOL! and it is, indeed, my favorite Yiddish. And every time I think of it, I remember his butchering the pronunciation.

And yes, I use mom spit all the time, much to Demon Baby's horror.

I'm surprised about that men don't drink white wine idea in your country. My Italian husband, who doesn't drink beer, is very comfortable here in New Zealand or in Italy ordering white or red wine in a bar or anywhere. I thought we had a major macho problem here with all sorts of rules about what makes a real man but we don't have that requirement.

As for quirky habits, I wish I was more observant of people's mannerisms but I focus more on what makes them tick inside their heads. I analyse people's actions and motives all the time and that flows into my writing but I agree that those small ticks are really important as a means of depicting personality.

Jude! That would be Dad Phlegm.

Can't think of anything right now, but agree with your description about how people lie. It's an interest of mine....Google F.A.C.S. and you'll find some neat information...

It's an odd thing here, really. Red is fine. White less so. And it's not MY hang-up, but is most definitely something you see if you are in the bar biz. It's lessening with the rise in "wine IQ" here--and people taking more of an interest in tastings and so on.
