What's Your Run?
My dear, beloved, wonderful, generous friend Ewoh ran a race in my honor yesterday, fundraising for a cure to Crohn's disease. He finished . . . and says the run "transformed" him. Leave it to a zen guy like Ewoh to be transformed by sore muscles.
I have to tell you that the last weeks haven't been easy for Ewoh. First of all, he is on the hook for whatever he doesn't raise to his $3,500 goal. That's commitment. Visit his race site! Second, during the long training up to the race, he had walking pneumonia, sickness in his house, and all the usual ups and downs we all have as parents and writers and, in his case, working a day job.
So where did he find the guts? Read back ONE post on his blog. It's all about transforming the mind. Reframing what's got you down.
I have to tell you that the last few months have sucked around here in Orloff-land. I could give you reasons--money, deadlines . . . kids who were sick or had teachers that left a lot to be desired, big decisions, some family stuff I can't go into, a kid getting ready for college, money woes related to a kid going off to college, deadlines, deadlines, deadlines, no life, and to cap it off, some Crohn's pain, which hasn't happened in a LONG time, but I am too rundown and I know it. It's all a big, long whine-fest, though really. It's all a run.
So today . . . I am telling myself how much I LOVE deadlines, and LOVE everything I do. LOVE IT! We all have runs. Uphill, in the rain, in the cold. So I've set my sights on a new finish line.
What's your run today? And what inspires you?
And hop on over to Ewoh's. The guy is seriously awesome.

Today I'm thinking all my fellow bloggers inspire me. They all have such uplifting posts today.
As for deadlines? I wish I had one...
Fear inspires me. Fear of something worse than failure...not even trying. Proving something to myself inspires me to indulge in my love of and need to write.
Life inspires me -- its potential that is sometimes cloaked in the mundane. I always strive to see through that and remember why we're here...to do our best, be our best, and to leave something behind.
Congratulations to Brian! The Zen thing is the only quality that keeps me going most days.
My two-page résumé is broken by two expressions from martial arts, that were written in Japanese characters by my karate master.
The first is: Ken Zen Ichi: roughly, mind and body are one.
The second is: Shin Shin Ichi Niho: bring harmony to mind and spirit.*
I also agree with the aimless writer. The only worse than a deadline is not having one.
______________
*I've always been amazed that no one ever asks me what the characters mean when they're holding my résumé in their hands.
I don't know what inspires me. Yes, cynically, mortgage payments and Visa bills inspire me quite a bit. Sorry, wish it weren't true.
Thinking about missing out on things in life, all the things that will go left undone, that often inspires me to try and fill my life with at least some of those things.
Time going by too fast, that inspires me.
And yeah, it's been an odd summer for me. Good in many ways, but professionally I'm not so sure it's been all that great.
Today, my run is unpacking from vacation and finding my writer stride again.
Also, my son-in-law left for Iraq Saturday, and we're all adjusting to "change." When I think of my youngest, alone with 3 children for a year in Alaska, I'm determined to focus on nothing but positive. I love doing laundry, I'm safe in my home. Facing a new story is not frightening in comparison.
What inspires me? We all have a special place in this world. We're not alone, and we have everything we need inside of us.
Aimless:
My fellow bloggers inspire me, too.

Beautiful . . . Potential is sometimes cloaked in the mundane. I love that!!!!!

Did I tell you my two middle kids started Ninjitsu training? They have all these Japanese expressions now. It's been SO good for them--love it. My son hopes to test for Green Belt at end of summer. Baby Girl for her first Yellow.

Mark:
Time is lightning fast lately.

Ladonna:
Hugs to you and your daughter. I can't imagine . . . .
PEACE!

You know I'm just going to write a blog post about it. I'd rather not take over your comments section.
But the gist. Life's too short. Enjoy the happy moments. Really embrace the hell out of them, because those will be the things that get you through.
This is going to sound embarrassingly corny, but love is inspiring me. I'm just thinking of how much I care about my readers, how much I want them to feel a moment of respite while reading my stuff.
And blind faith, I guess. Sometimes it's just working up the will to take one more step. Then one more.
So cool about Ewoh!
Did I tell you my two middle kids started Ninjitsu training?
Osu!
melissa:
Life is short, indeed. Carpe Diem.

Not corny at all. Love makes the world go 'round, right?

"Aim high. You may still miss the target but at least you won't shoot your foot off." Lois McMaster Bujold
Life is short and can end in the blink of an eye. Appreciating the people around me and the things in my life that I all too often take for granted helps me to remember how good my life really is.
Reading about others who have no home, are in danger of losing their home, have to give up beloved pets because they can't afford to feed them and their children, too. All of this reminds me that I, in my home, with my loving wife and our 3 furry children who get the best vet care because we can afford it, am very well taken care of. Always have been.
My deep desire to have more must be tempered with my awareness of all that I do have. If I dwell on what I don't have, I live in misery. If I dwell on what I do have, I live in joy. The choice is mine and it's harder than it should be.
Sarah:
Thank you for your reminder to be grateful for all we have.

I am loving this quote.
Erica, thank you for the enormously nice words and such a wonderful post. You are so very inspiring... much of the reason I wanted to run the race in your honor in the first place.
I too am inspired by love. That is the idea and the inspiration behind the next tattoo I am going to get.
Some of the stats I'm gong to put up on my blog with the pictures are going to blow you away. I get choked up just thinking about the difference we (as a team) made and are making towards funding a cure for Crohn's and getting the word our and raising awareness.
But what it really comes down to Erica, is that who you are being in the world is truly amazing and inspiring. It has the regular visitors coming back for more every day. It has me inspired to do something like this race to show you how much I appreciate and care about you and the voice you are in the world.
So thank you very much for being my daily inspiration.
Brian:
Well, CRAP, you made me cry.
:-)

Congrats, Ewoh!
Great writing inspires me. Music. Cinema...
And this.
I don't think Brian should cough up $3500 just because people failed to donate a sum he chose arbitrarily. He should donate the amount he raised and pat himself on the back for the effort.
Stephen,
I would pat myself on the back, but it just hurts too much. :)
I also didn't arbitrarily pick the sum... it was a part of the package. You get to do the race if you raise this much money, or pay the difference yourself. Yes, I chose to take it on. But it is not like I chose to take on a debt for no reason and then asked people to pay me back.
Ponying up the difference will definitely be painful... but honestly it is worth the result for the amount that is being contributed overall from the efforts of all the people on the team.
That I may not be able to get a whiz-bang phone because I don't have the money, or I may not be able to go out to dinner with my wife a few times, or going to the movies with the family has to wait a few months is really inconsequential in comparison to what people like Erica and other Crohn's sufferers have to deal with day by day, month by month, for the rest of their lives.
In the end, I'm responsible and a couple of thousand dollars is really not the end of the world. Nut the stiff muscles will go away much sooner :)
I'll rephrase: Brian shouldn't have to cough up $3500 because he failed to raise an arbitrarily chosen sum.
It could just as well have been $1000 and you would have exceeded your pledge. It could just as well have been $10,000 and you'd be entering the witness protection program. The sum is arbitrary. Turn over what you raised and buy winter coats for your kids.
Hi Erica and everyone!
Today I'm trying to take things a moment at a time, looking for inspiration in the now. Also,
my deadlines scare the crap out of me -- and you can't get more inspired than that :)
Hang in there, Erica. And Ewoh, you totally rock...I'm on my way over to your site.

Underdogs inspire me.
That's wonderful of him! What a wonderful inspiration.
And Erica, go ahead an whine! You are human! I know that half of June and nearly all of July were possibly the most difficult months for me in a very long while. And I'm happy to whine about it! ;o)
Well done, Ewoh - you're a champ. I also am coming over to your site. See you there.
