More Emotions
Since I just sobbed my eyes out saying good-bye to my sister and her children, I thought I would post about books that MOVED me. Not books that I enjoyed, or even loved. But books that actually wringed emotion out of me in a more intense way.
First book to make me cry award: Jo's Boys. I remember reading one of the final scenes and crying--I was maybe 10. And it was the first time a book made me actually cry.
Most wrenching cry award: The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I was pregnant with Oldest Son--about 9 months along and HUGE and I was in bed with pillows all around me and a box of tissues, just sobbing my way through the scene with the twins. If you've read the book, you know what I mean. Considering how huge I was (Oldest Son was nearly 10 pounds), perhaps I thought I was HAVING twins.
First book that made me ANGRY award: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I won't even go off on the tangent of how this feels way too real to me right now, given the state of our government. I read this book the year of its first release. I was in my early 20s, and I was angry. I would read it and my heart would pound. A book pulled that emotion from me, pure and simple. I was enraged. I was haunted when it was over.
First book that made me long for something award: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This book made me long for a secret garden of my very own, for a place that was mine. I was maybe 12 when I read it. I have re-read a couple of times since.
First book to scare the crap out of me award: Night Shift by Stephen King. I didn't realize a BOOK could make it impossible to sleep and have me afraid to check under the bed. I was young . . . and I was terrified. I remember even the ticking of my watching creeped me out in the middle of the night. And I couldn't put it down!
First book to make me look like a raving lunatic in public award: Anything by him. Every time I read David Sedaris, I laugh out loud, belly laughs, tears rolling down my face. I look positively nuts. He is hilarious. I particularly like the story of his father's alarm at his sister Amy's fat suit. You have to read the book. ANY of his books.
So there's a short list. Please, share yours in any category.

Sorry it was such a sad morning for you, Erica. When someone moves away it's not easy.
My favorite book of all time is Uncle Tom's Cabin. I read it in my early 20's and it evoked a range of emotions. I remember closing it after every chapter and just laying it on my chest so maybe the words would seep through and become part of me.
And thanks for adding my blog to your list. I've found it a great way to start my day to not only read my favorite writing blogs (yours -cough-cough) but to do some introspective writing on writing myself. Kind of lets it all out so I can move on with the day.
Hi Amy:
My blog is exactly that for me--mind cleansing.
As for Uncle Tom's Cabin--I didn't react that way to it because I read it in my teens, and I think the dialect was difficult for me. I will have to re-read it because you are the third or fourth person in recent memory to say something similar. So that, to me, is the universe prodding me to read it.
:-)
E
Awww, hugs to you. Oldest is leaving soon, too! Send me details on how she likes conservatory, please! :-)
I have such a terrible memory. I can remember books when I'm asked. I'm loving Eat, Pray, Love at the moment. Have you read it? I think you'd like it. I'm pretty sure you'd love it, actually, but I don't know your reading tastes that well.
I actually have a copy of Night Shift. There's a very nice introduction by John D. MacDonald, and the stories are pretty good. King never fails to make me laugh. Don't suppose I could prod you to re-read that one, eh?
I think the first book that made me angry and sad and longing was Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms.
spy:
I have read it--and did love it. I was worried a bit because I have bought Buddha or Bust--based on reviews. And they sound a little similar. But I loathed Buddha or Bust . . . I could not believe the critics read the same book I did. Even after he supposedly "found" Buddhism, he was whiny. But her book was very different and I enjoyed it.
E
Jude:
I adored that book, too. Always remember . . . "Like saying good-bye to a statue"--isn't that line it there? Anyway, good one.
E
That line's in the final paragraph. What a great memory you have!
Jude:
Wow . . . I haven't read that since 1983 . . . I just remember that being so powerful, that single line.
E
The first book to ever make me cry, and by cry i mean blubber and have to put it down to stop crying before i could read more is "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffengegger
The first book to ever make me laugh out loud is "A Dirty Job" by Christopher Moore.
jessiegirl:
I love Moore's humor too! I laughed when I saw a couple of his COVERS even.
E
First book to make me cry was CHARLOTTE'S WEB
First book to scare the crap out of me was THE HANDMAID'S TALE
First book to make me look like a lunatic on a NY to LA flight- ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY- I was practically rolling in the aisles laughing- David Sedaris is amazing!
Oh, and I love Christopher Moore too!
alyson:
Oh . . . I loved Charlotte's Web. And Me Talk Pretty One Day is . . . it makes my sides ache he is so funny.
E
i know this is gonna sound so stupid, but the last chapter of the last harry potter book made me cry. The stuff Harry says about "the bravest man he ever knew" just started the waterworks up.
I think I also cried when I read "Blood and Chocolate" in fact I know I did. And the book is SO much better than the movie ( and a completely different story, I might add, they completely butchered that book on the screen)
Right now the book that makes me look like a lunatic is "Pleasure Unbound" by Larissa Ione. Dark, edgy paranormal romance that is funny as hell. I mean laugh out loud several times a chapter, funny. I would so love to meet this writer for coffee.
I'm enjoying everyone's comments so much, and jotting titles down.
I remember reading Tom Sawyer when I was in grade school. I was the designated reader, and was able to sit at the teacher's desk and read a chapter every Friday. I really got into the accents, etc, and it still brings a smile to my face. My audience was captive, literally, and I learned the power of story.
The Nancy Drew hardbacks made me fall in love with reading. They also taught me sleep was optional.
SHAWNA by Kathleen Woodiwiss swept me away as a young woman, and I vowed to protect love.
FANCY PANTS by Susan Elizabeth Philips made me laugh so hard I cried, and my writer's heart was fully lit.
Thanks for all these suggestions of a reading list. Many, many books and movies make me cry. I only have to see or read about a person crying for the tears to start. I have a well-honed sympathy gene, which can be rather annoying sometimes when in public.
zoe:
I thought Blood and Chocolate was beautiful.
E
ladonna:
Fancy Pants . . . my Oldest loves her books and that's one on her shelf. She buys all Phillips titles, I think.
E
Suzanne:
Tell me about it. I am a major public weeper. Kodak commercials . . . anything. Waterworks.
Oddly enough, even when facing horrible hardship in my OWN life, I rarely cry. But I sure tap into others.
